Ethical crocodile farming

A working farm, built around the water

Seronera is an established crocodile farm, dedicated to the responsible breeding, rearing and management of Nile crocodiles. We operate in full compliance with South African legislation and international conservation standards.

Our crocodiles live in spacious, integrated habitats that mimic their wild counterparts, in a natural and enriching environment rather than traditional single-pen structures. By farming Nile crocodiles with care and respect, we contribute to their conservation.

The breeding process

From egg to open water

Nile crocodiles are endemic to this part of South Africa, so the climate suits them perfectly. Follow the river to see how a crocodile grows up at Seronera.

  1. 13 years

    Ready to breed

In captivity, a Nile crocodile reaches breeding age at around thirteen. Our mature crocodiles live in seven dedicated breeder dams.

  2. Once a year

    The eggs are laid

Eggs are laid only once a year. How many depends on the maturity of the female.

  3. 3 months

    In the incubator

The eggs go into incubators that simulate their natural nest, and hatch after about three months.

  4. 9 months

    In the hothouse

The hatchlings move to a temperature-controlled hothouse, where they spend their first nine months.

  5. Open air

    Out to the dams

From the hothouse they move to the dams, where they grow up in the open air of the Lowveld.

  6. 5 more years

    Reaching their potential

It then takes a further five years for the crocodiles to reach their potential.
